Title: Those times where we loved each other and treasured our friendship

The boy walked on the almost empty street. He dragged his bare feet bounded by chains and headed towards that big building he called “school” with his ragged clothes.

Teito was an orphan. He remembered the time when he was about five and some people came to get him from the orphanage, to somewhere call a “school”. It was not a fun and loving place. It was somewhere where no love and friendship could be found. Students fight and kill in order to survive and serve the army. To kill or to be killed. Only the strongest survive. These teachings were taught to Teito when he first entered. He hated those battles where he had to kill in order to live on. His hands were drenched in blood. He felt dirty, ever so dirty.

“MAMA!”

Teito looked. A little girl hugged an older lady and that lady said, “Dear, come on in to eat dinner. Mmmm, do you smell the fragrance? Mother cooked fish eyes!”

Mother? What or who was a mother. Why does he not have one? He looked up and saw the clock tower indicating that it would be twelve o’clock soon. He had to get to “school” quick.

He rushed into the classroom. He had theory defence that day. His teacher walked into the room followed by a young boy. Another victim, he thought. “Today we have another new student called Mikage.” Mikage smiled. Teito felt sudden warmth in his heart. Mikage sat beside Teito and looked at him.

“What’s your name?”

“Teito. Teito Klein.”

Mikage reached out his hand and Teito stared at it. “Friends,” Mikage said. Teito continued staring at it. “That’s what I hate about this place! There’s no love!”

“Love?”

Mikage guffawed. Everybody stared at him and he immediately blushed and uttered an ‘opps sorry’. He decided to take down notes on defence instead. Teito asked again, “What’s love?” “The love I’m talking about is those that are in friendships. Friends sacrificing themselves to save each other. Friends that protect each other.”

“Can I have some of that too? It sounds kind of warm.”

Mikage grinned and said, “No problem. Now we’re friends and I will protect you.” Teito did not know what he meant but he simply uttered, “Me too.”

From then on, they have never been separated. Never has anyone seen them not together except for those times where they have fights scheduled at the same timings. They had been lucky. Lucky enough to not be scheduled to fight against each other. But, no good would last.

When Mikage’s name was called out that day, Teito sensed something was wrong. Something bad was going to happen. “Teito Klein.” No way, Teito thought. No way. No way. His heart was beating really fast. Dead fast.

“Today’s fight has been scheduled for you and Mikage to fight against each other. Please prepare for the battle.” Mikage looked at Teito and Teito looked back. They had to fight against each other. “No worries,” Mikage smiled. Teito returned the smile with another that did not reach his eyes.

The time has come for the fight. Students gathered and teachers whispered. The match was so intense. “Now, the time has come for the two best friends to fight. I wonder if LOVE could get them anywhere. AND… THE FIGHT STARTS NOW!”

None of the duo moved a muscle. Mikage started walking over to Teito’s side. He screamed, “Love is boundless. And I treasure this friendship, Teito. This love that was inside this friendship intertwined with our lives. That’s why our love would never cease to exist.” A bitter tear rolled down his cheeks and he began rushing over to Teito, sword in his arms.

Teito panicked. Mikage was his very best friend. To kill or to be killed. Mikage rushed over to Teito and grabbed his arm and jabbed it into his own body. Fresh blood flowed out. Teito was in a state of shock. Mikage whispered into Teito’s ear, “I love you, Teito.”

Teito’s eyes stung but he did not care. His best of friends had just sacrificed himself in order for him to survive on. Tears welled up in his eyes and fresh drops of tears dripped onto Mikage’s face. Teito hugged his friend’s corpse tightly. He uttered into Mikage’s ears, “I will live on, for you. To love this country and to protect this country.” He bit his lips and said bitterly. A tear rolled down his cheeks.

“I love you too, Mikage.”
